Freedom is no story.
Modern Mythology isn’t about ancient gods and goddesses, though I admit to loving them.
Instead, Modern Mythology seeks to heal the harms caused by monotheistic patriarchal power structures. You know, dominion over nature, the animals of the land, the birds of the air, the fish of the sea, indigenous people, and of course, women. Every fucking thing.
Modern Mythology asks the question: Why do we still believe this shit?
The old me used to write at the intersection of academic disciplines like Mythology and depth Psychology, blended with … blah, blah, blah. You know. I was hiding behind big words while appearing open—that old trick.
The new me has decided to bear my throat and soft belly in the conscious decision to confront my story - our stories. What else am I going to do with whatever years remain? Hide? Behind intellect? Sigh.
I’m taking down the pseudo-academic wall-o-words in favor of real ones, emotional ones. True ones.
So, here it is: We are more capable than we think, and our world can reflect that. But we have to insist on change; we have to work together; we have to love. Empathy isn’t weakness; it’s the antidote.
Let’s talk about how our cultural stories, especially ones about the fear of death, create political systems - institutions like religions, courts, school systems, bully systems, and information silos because stories are dangerous, too. Do people die from a bad cultural story? All the time. Do people end up in gulags in El Salvador because of them? You know they do.
Let’s discuss the beliefs that govern our lives—the myths that spawn the religious and political systems we live and die by. Let’s shine a light on what’s possible.
I’ve been writing for 25 years. I’ve got two shiny master's degrees, one in Mythology and the other an MFA, yet I’ve published very little until now. Why is that? My story was about a lack of safety in the world, so I was lying low. This would be funny if you knew big, brassy me. But now, in the latter half of my sixties, there’s no place left to hide unless I’m willing to go out of this world keeping all my secrets, which I’m not. I’m stepping out from the shadows to help create a world we can all live in.
Let’s build it together. One story, one idea, one conversation at a time.
